structure dental implants If you’ve lost a tooth, you’re not alone. Tooth loss—although not ideal—is not an uncommon problem throughout our Nation. If you’re one of those people that love to see the facts, here you go! There’s been an estimated 69% of Americans from the ages 35 to 44 that have at least one missing tooth and just about 1 in 4 people that have lost all of their teeth by the time they turn 74 years old.

With that being said, you’re not the only one looking for a long-lasting, stable tooth replacement. After all, you need each and every one of your teeth.

If you’re looking for the perfect fix, consider getting dental implants. Let’s look at how far dental implants have come and how they can help you!

The History of Dental Implants

Can you believe that the very first dental implant was found from the Mayan empire? Archaeologists found an ancient skull in the Honduras with ancient dental implants created from seashells within a woman’s jaw.

Since then, archaeologists have discovered teeth made of gold, silver, and ivory in the mouths of Ancient Egyptians. But what happened to get us from one point of hammered sea shells in our mouths to the modern titanium posts that naturally fuse with our bodies today?

Thankfully, an osteopaedic surgeon named Per-Ingvar Bränemark was interested in the healing process of bodies. He took the time to experiment on rabbits.

While studying the process of healing and regeneration of bodies, he came across an amazing discovery. After inserting a titanium post into a rabbit’s leg,  he discovered that the post couldn’t be removed a few weeks later. He realized that the bone had naturally fused with the titanium!

This study was then applied to dental technology throughout the years.  In fact, Bränemark placed the first dental implant in 1965 in a human jaw.

Be Thankful for Dental Implants Today

Long gone are the days of ancient dental implants. Today, digital practices are becoming widely used and are credited as the future of dentistry! Incorporating computer-controlled components, digital dentistry is used across the spectrum of dental practices, including dental implants.

When it comes to restoring patients’ smiles, digital dentistry implants create impressive results. Speak to your dentist about 3D printed/guided dental implants. These are precision-matched to fit each patient’s personal case of tooth loss. Not only does this allow secure placement, but it increases the implant success rate while boosting patient satisfaction.

Believe it or not, modern dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%!
